Gorilla & Primate Trekking
Rwanda or Uganda? One unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas, planned your way.
Why travel here
Mountain gorillas live in just two places we visit: Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and Uganda's Bwindi and Mgahinga forests. Rwanda is quick, streamlined and home to Africa's most luxurious gorilla lodges; Uganda offers better value, longer primate-and-savanna circuits and the unique four-hour habituation experience.
What you will experience
- Rwanda permit $1,500; Uganda permit $800 ($600 in April, May and November).
- Rwanda: about 2.5 hours by road from Kigali to the trailhead, on volcanic slopes and bamboo; ideal for 3 to 4 day trips.
- Uganda: about 1 hour by air from Entebbe to Bwindi, on steep, dense forest ridges; ideal for longer journeys.
- Gorilla Habituation Experience: Uganda only.
- Chimpanzees: Nyungwe in Rwanda or Kibale, East Africa's best, in Uganda.
- Both countries: one hour with the family, maximum 8 visitors, minimum age 15.
